At present, biomass is the most widely used renewable source of energy. It is composed of all organic matter present on the Earth, all biodegradable substances of either plant or animal origin. Biomass is obtained from agricultural, forest and industrial production waste, but also from use-specific energy-crop plantations.
As a fuel, biomass is much less harmful to the environment: the amount of carbon dioxide emitted to the atmosphere when using biomass equals the amount of CO2 absorbed by plants which regenerate it during the process of photosynthesis.
